EMBnet is glad to announce the affiliation of BioCANET (https://www.biocanet.com/
), the Bioinformatics and Molecular Biocomputing network for the Central American region. The final agreement between the two parties was approved on February 5th, 2019.
BIOCANET is presently composed of seven Central American countries (Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama). The mission being similar to the EMBnet’s one, that is to support academic and research endeavours in different areas of Bioinformatics by providing training and networking opportunities.
BioCANET was founded in 2012, initially with the support of the University of Costa Rica and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Costa Rica.
During the last seven years, the network has fruitfully realised many training courses, conferences, workshops, symposiums and large seminars in Latin America that have led to the creation of undergraduate, masters and doctorate programs related to Bioinformatics in different universities of the region.
In 2018, BIOCANET was affiliated by the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) as their second largest Ibero-American group.
EMBnet is very glad to support BIOCANET to continue working on its capacity building to improve the formation of bioinformatic talents and the development of research projects in Latin America.
