First SIB Summer School on "Determinism, Stochasticity and Robustness in Biological Processes", August 3-7, 2009
Experimental biology is now making heavy use of high-throughput
methods and computational data analysis is becoming indispensable for
the study of biological processes. At the same time, computational
models of biological systems can be validated against a large body of
experimental data that is being obtained in the course of numerous
systems biology projects. The first summer school of the PhD Training
Network of the Swiss Insitute of Bioinformatics has the topic “Determinism, Stochasticity and Robustness in Biological Processes”,
2-5 June 2009, DNA expression microarray data analysis using R and Bioconductor
This hands-on course covers the analysis of DNA microarray expression data
using the R and Bioconductor software. We start from the raw data and end up
with a list of differentially expressed genes with some ideas on the
pathways and biological processes that might have been active during the
experiment. No previous familiarity with R is required, but it is beneficial
to have some basic knowledge of DNA microarrays. For more information and registration,

Call for Contributions: Art&Science Exhibition @ ISMB/ECCB 2009
For the ISMB/ECCB 2009 Art&Science Exhibition the ISCB and the
ISCB Student Council invite all interested conference attendees
to submit artistic images and videos that have been generated as
part of a research project. They are also soliciting images and
videos resulting from creative efforts that involve scientific
concepts or employ scientific tools and methods.
Participate in this exciting ISMB/ECCB event to surprise and
inspire us, to open our eyes and minds! Submission Deadline is
ENSEMBL Courses ENSGEN09 and ENSAPI09
ENSGEN training course. A real chance of having a closer look at the several
ways to view genomic data, to produce elaborate searches and to do data
mining with BIOMART.
ENSAPI
training course. Here you can learn how to write scripts that pull
resouces from ENSEMBL almost effortlessly. We will have no time to
teach Perl programming but the level of knowledge is minimal. If needed
we recommend that applicants do a review of simple object-oriented
programming concepts and the basic syntactic rules of Perl.
Proteomics Data Management for Bioscientists Course
The Proteomics Data Evaluation course is a three day course, running from 6th April 2009 to 8th April 2009, in Manchester. It's overall aim is to provide attendees with a comprehensive insight into dealing with MS-based proteomics data from a mass spectrometer. This is done via a combination of lecture-seminars and hands-on practicals.
Computer superpower strengthens attempts to combat common diseases
New large-scale sequencing technology will revolutionise biomedical research in the coming decade. Uppsala University's entity UPPMAX is now expanding its operations and providing researchers with a powerful system for large-scale compute and storage of data, which can lead to new breakthroughs in research on our public-health disorders.
