Semantic integration and interoperability of bioinformatics resources

Location:
University of Manchester
4 Dec 2007 - 12:00am
7 Dec 2007 - 7:30pm
Europe/London

Web Services are becoming an increasingly popular means of making bioinformatics tools availble to researchers via the internet, but deploying resources so as to make them robust and easy-to-use is not always straightforward. This workshop aims to give participants insight into the issues involved in exposing tools and databases as globally available resources using Web Service technology. The programme covers issues from the various low level technologies available, to the grand-challenges of Semantic Integration

The workshop beings with a series of seminars from major database and tool providers, describing problems they have overcome, decisions they have made and lessons learned during the development of their systems. Participants then have access for three days to experts in web service technology for 'hands on' sessions to help design, implement and refine web service interfaces to their own tools.

4th December: Seminars

The workshop includes seminars from:

  • Gos Micklem, Dept.Genetics/Dept. of Applied Maths, Cambridge University "The FlyMine/ InterMine projects"
  • Colin Batchelor, Royal Society of Chemistry. "Project Prospect: Chemistry and the semantic journal"
  • Tania Lima, SIB, Geneva, Switzerland
  • Sarah Hunter, EBI, Hinxton, UK. "InterPro: hurdles to software interoperability and data integration"
  • Duncan Hull, The University of Manchester
  • Steve Pettifer, The University of Manchester

5th to 7th December: Hands on Sessions

Computer Scientists from a number of institutions will be available to support hands-on development of web services for 3 days, and participants are encouraged to bring whatever issues, queries and problems they may have with web service deployment to the workshop. Other experts in semantics, ontologies and workflow technology will be available on demand. A programme of hands on events will be published at the workshop, however the detailed schedule will be influenced by the needs of the participants. Wireless and wired networking will be available throughout the workshop; however participants will need to bring their own laptop computers.

Accommodation

The workshop will be hosted by The Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, part of The University of Manchester. Cost of meals and accomodation during the workshop (i.e. between the 4th and the 6th) will be covered by the EMBRACE EU Network of Excellence (we are very happy to help organise accomodation before or after this time at the participant's own cost). Participants will need to cover the cost of their own travel to and from the workshop.
